I knew I shouldn't have posted that last entry. I was afraid I'd jinx it, and SURE ENOUGH I did. Madeleine wouldn't sleep alone that very night and woke up every 2 hours to nurse. In Taiwan, parents usually don't sing praises about their kids because of this superstition. If you tell a Taiwanese or Chinese parent your daughter is so obedient because she is, the parent will usually say, "No no no. My daughter is such a pain, she's a naughty girl." I've learned my lesson, I won't speak so fast again. Just when I thought I'd gotten the basics down pat, I didn't.
I was really bummed out she'd started refusing to sleep alone again, but am over it now. I'm telling myself, every baby is different, if she isn't ready, she just isn't ready, no big deal, I'm home all day to be with her anyway.
ANYWAY. This post is about the baby massage class we attended yesterday. I was really nervous that Madeleine would just whine and cry throughout the whole thing. I'd signed up over a month ago, and at that time I couldn't put her down on her back for more than 2 minutes before she'd start stirring and fussing. To my surprise she was adorable! We got there 15 minutes early, as soon as I peeled her out of the wrap she woke up. She seemed amused to find herself in a new place, and started looking about. I was hoping she'd interest herself in some of the other babies (there were 5 other babies from 1 -5 months old), but she was really interested in me, smiling, giggling, and from time to time, she'd look curisouly at the other mommies. Everything was going great, we'd done the toes, legs, bum, and were starting on the tummy when the little boy on the left started crying this intense, deep cry. He'd actually cry the whole way through but his mother would pop his pacifier into his mouth. He was the same age as Madeleine but looked much smaller. I learned later on by his mother that he was born on the 1st of January instead of the 12th of February. But the sound coming out of his little body was so LOUD! It made Madeleine nervous and she started crying too, and another baby started crying too...in the end, 4 out of 6 of the babies were whailing in their mothers' arms. His cry must have been contagious.
So Madeleine ended up wanting cuddles and no more massaging. I held her in my arms till the end. The instructor made it very clear that our priority was to listen to our baby's needs, and if they didn't want to be massaged, we had to listen.
I really felt for the mother of that little boy, she seemed so embarrassed about her baby crying, almost defeated. She must have had NOOOO break whatsoever since the first day of the year...she started explaining why her little boy was acting up to me after class and I listened, nodding in comprehension.
We have another session next Thursday, I hope we'll get through the tummy and chest part!
